As the Copa del Rey semifinals approach, football enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating the first-leg clash between FC Barcelona and Atlético Madrid, set to take place at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys. This encounter promises to be a tactical battle between two of Spain’s football powerhouses.

FC Barcelona’s Form and Strategy: Under the guidance of Hansi Flick, Barcelona has showcased impressive form in 2025, remaining unbeaten with 11 victories and two draws in 13 matches. Their recent 2-0 triumph over UD Las Palmas, highlighted by goals from Dani Olmo and Ferran Torres, underscores their attacking prowess. However, the team faces a potential setback with the injury concern of young talent Lamine Yamal, who suffered a foot injury in the last match. Flick remains optimistic about Yamal’s availability, stating, “We will have to wait, I think he will be able to play. I am positive, although we will have to see what the doctor says.”

In terms of lineup, Wojciech SzczÄ™sny is expected to continue as the first-choice goalkeeper, given Marc-André ter Stegen’s ongoing recovery from injury. The defensive line may see the return of Íñigo Martínez alongside Pau Cubarsí, with Jules Koundé and Alejandro Balde occupying the full-back positions. The midfield trio of Frenkie de Jong, Pedri, and Dani Olmo is anticipated to orchestrate play, while the forward line could feature Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski, and potentially Lamine Yamal, pending his fitness assessment.

Atlético Madrid’s Approach: Diego Simeone’s Atlético Madrid enters this fixture on the back of an eight-match unbeaten streak, including a commanding 3-0 victory over Valencia. Their defensive solidity has been a cornerstone of their success, conceding only 16 goals in La Liga this season. The partnership of José Giménez and Robin Le Normand in central defense has been particularly formidable.

In attack, the synergy between Antoine Griezmann and Julián Álvarez has been fruitful, with Álvarez netting 19 goals across all competitions this season. Simeone is likely to deploy a 4-4-2 formation, aiming to maintain defensive resilience while capitalizing on counter-attacking opportunities. Juan Musso is expected to start between the posts, continuing his role as the Copa del Rey goalkeeper.

Head-to-Head Dynamics: The two sides last met in December, with Atlético Madrid securing a 2-1 victory at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys. Barcelona initially took the lead but were unable to maintain their advantage. Reflecting on that encounter, Hansi Flick emphasized the need for clinical finishing, stating, “We have to be more effective in front of goal.”

Statistically, both teams have demonstrated offensive capabilities in the Copa del Rey, with Barcelona scoring 14 goals and Atlético 15 en route to the semifinals. Defensively, each has conceded just once in the competition, highlighting their organizational strengths.

Anticipated Tactical Battle: This semifinal clash is expected to be a tactical duel, with Barcelona likely to dominate possession and Atlético focusing on structured defense and swift counter-attacks. The midfield battle will be crucial, as both teams boast creative and industrious players capable of influencing the game’s tempo. As the first leg unfolds, both managers will aim to secure an advantage while remaining mindful of the return fixture. Fans can look forward to a compelling encounter that encapsulates the strategic depth and competitive spirit of Spanish football.
