While we won’t pack out the MCG this year, or attend a morning service,there’s still a way to honour our Anzacs.
When times get tough, it’s the small acts of kindness that go a long way. For many Australians, this time of the year is essential. It’s time we commemorate Australians who served and gave their lives during times of war.
It’s hard to imagine Australians were once preparing to aid Britain against the wrath of Germany, mainly because we are the furthest country from both, other nations and war. We would compare to that of hobbits in the grand scheme of the world’s people. Not that we are short,we enjoy the simple pleasures,good food, ale and great company,a happy people, much like Tolkien’s little friends.
In correlation to happy people, part of our ability to show gratitude arrives this year in a different way. Under the mundane and awful circumstances, we find ourselves in due to COVID-19, Cardly is working closely with veteran organisation Legacy to help get thank you cards to veterans and their families, to honour our heroes despite the lack of Anzac Day marches and events this year.
All profits from card sales for isolated veterans will go to Legacy, a charity providing services to Australian families suffering after the injury or death of a spouse or parent, during or after their defence force service. The fundraising initiative will help Legacy in lieu of physical fundraising that usually takes place at this time of year.
Templates have been set up to guide messaging, and any member of the public can jump online and create a card for just $4. Messages include famous Anzac quotes as well as letters of gratitude such as: “Thank you for your sacrifice, for what you gave up to provide a brighter future for generations to come”, or “Lest we forget”. For those who know a veteran or war widow in the community and wish to write a personal note, they can also go through Cardly’s main website and money from any Anzac Day design will still go towards this cause.
